Austro-Hungarian Military Cemetery, Oševljek
During World War I the area east of Vrtojba, rear area of the front, is where a number of war hospitals were set up and next to them cemeteries. In 1917 the cemetery in
Oševljek was built. According to the Austrian archives the cemetery was called Mohorini. Austrian records from the war period are very scarce and it is impossible to confirm all of the names of the deceased and the exact position of the graves. After the end of World War I the Italian Military Authorities were in charge of handling the military cemeteries; they documented 957 soldiers and the same number of graves, 291 were recorded as unknown Austro-Hungarian soldiers. The first burial was documented as being on the 18th of December of 1916 and the last one in the end of October of 1917. Most of the known buried soldiers belonged to the K.u.K. Infanterieregiment “Graf Jelacic” N°79 (Imperial and Royal Infantry Regiment Nr. 79) from recruitment area of Otočac (Croatia), K.K. Gebirgsschiitzen-regiment N° 1 (Imperial-Royal Mountain Rifle Regiment Nr, 1) from the recruitment area of Klagenfurt ih Austria and the K.K. Gebirgsschiitzenregiment N°2 (Imperial-Royal Mountain Rifle Regiment Nr. 2) from the recruitment area of Ljubljana.
The cemetery has been renovated several times, the last renovation works were done in 1980.
